What is interesting about Strawberries is that not only are they not a true berry like blueberries, furthermore, that sweet red fleshly part of the fruit that we adore eating is not actually the Strawberry fruit rather it is part of the Strawberry flower! The actual Strawberry fruit is the seed like portion we see on the skin. Additionally and more confusing, those little strawberry fruits we call the seeds contain the true strawberry seeds inside.
Reportedly, the great majority of Organic Strawberries grown, for example, in the United States are of the Albion variety. An organic conundrum of sorts, which most reports on this are exaggerated or wrong, is the loophole in the USDA Organic standards regarding allowing Organic Strawberry growers to use conventional grown starts, when Organic Strawberry starts are not commercially available.
The starts are young plants that will mature to berry bearing plants. These may have been grown in fumigated soil and sprayed with pesticide during the first few weeks of their life. However, from the time the starts leave their conventional nursery, at 4 to 6 weeks old, til harvest time, about 2 to 8 months later, they can never see another un-organic substance while their conventional counterparts could have been sprayed the day they were harvested!
